Churches, seven
Christian communities in the province of Asia. The last book of the Bible, the Revelation to John, also known sometimes as the Apocalypse [[➝ apocalypse]], is addressed to seven particular Churches. There were other Churches too, not mentioned, such as those at Colossae (Col. 1:2) and Troas (Acts 20:5–12), but the author chooses seven because that is the number of completeness (the creation by God in Gen. was completed in seven days) and so these seven represent the whole Church. Considerable local knowledge is, however, displayed about the seven selected: Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea (Rev. 1:11).
